Alumni Spotlight: Katie Ritchie of Deborah’s Palm

As you may know, when Katie Ritchie was a Human Services senior, she used her capstone project to start Palo Alto’s only nonprofit women’s community center.  The following are highlights from her August newsletter, much of which might be of interest to current students, alumni, and your friends and family from career and personal perspectives.  Note that some events are free whereas others charge a small fee.  For more information, be sure to see their website for a cornucopia of resources.

Well, Hello August! The summer is flying by, but we anticipate a great early Fall and have some wonderful, new programming ready for you coming soon! This newsletter highlights some of the new offerings:
Chess Class w/ Lauren

Alumni Spotlight: Katie Ritchie of Deborah’s Palm

Katie Ritchie, is the Founder and Executive Director of Deborah’s Palm, the only nonprofit women’s community center located in downtown Palo Alto.  In a recent newsletter, she writes,

“Dear Friends,  Can I tell you how excited I am about the cool things coming to you from Deborah’s Palm? I do not know of another place, that offers a full range of services designed especially for you when you need it… or a place to connect with others, just relax, talk, have tea… or a space to learn new skills, tools, set goals and change direction in your life? Quilting for Mary crafts beautiful quilts for women and men newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Enjoy tea and dessert and see the array of gorgeous quilts they have created! SPRING CLEANING & CLEANSING:  A De-Cluttering & De-Tox Seminar Saturday, March 8, 2014 10-2 PM.  Join with us as we begin our journey together, celebrating MARCH as our Cleansing month! Clutter is not only a disorganized build-up of “stuff” –  it affects us all in significant physical, mental and emotional ways. We will have a wonderful set of local professionals in the areas of architecture, professional organizing, space clearing, consignment sales and health/wellness. SPRING CLEAN Flea Market &  FREE Clothes Swap Saturday, March 22, 10-4 PM.  Put all that you’re learning about de-cluttering into action, and participate in our Flea Market, that will benefit Deborah’s Palm! We have limited space, and a portion of all sales goes to DP. Get in those closets, garages, drawers, basements and attics and SIMPLIFY! If you’d like to participate, let us know – we’ll send you an application, or come in and pick one up. OR come and shop and support us in this way! We will also be having a HUGE free clothes swap, snacks, and lots of fun!

Dining for Women Sunday, March 30, 6-8 PM. Come, learn and share a potluck dinner as we learn about different global, charitable organizations together! Join us for four times in 2014, as we partake in this “global giving circle” dedicated to helping women and girls in the developing world achieve their potential, gain equality in their countries and cultures, and overcome economic limitations and social bias. Philippa Perkin will be offering her Assertive Woman Workshop for four weeks, beginning March 17, and going until April 7, 2014. Monday evenings, from 7:00-8:30 PM.  This is a great, and very popular class, designed to educate and empower women in the skill of assertiveness.
